Erik ten Hag sees ‘key role’ for Donny van de Beek at Man United
Erik ten Hag has already earmarked Donny van de Beek as someone with a big part to play at Man United.
Almost two years ago now, Manchester United spent a hefty amount of money to bring in Donny van de Beek from AFC Ajax.
It’s 100% fair to say that the Dutchman has struggled throughout. A lack of playing time hasn’t helped his case, though when given first-team opportunities, the midfield has been poor.
A change in manager didn’t help Van de Beek’s case. In fact, Ralf Rangnick decided to ship the midfielder out to Everton on loan.
Van de Beek’s time over on Merseyside hasn’t gone too great, either. However, it all may be about to change for the number 34…
Ten Hag knows how to get the best of Van de Beek, with the pair having worked together in the past. If there’s any way back at Old Trafford for the Dutchman, it’s under the boss who put so much trust in him a few years ago.
It’s a confidence thing. Assuming Van de Beek is given a full pre-season, then a string of starts in the early stages of 2022/23, there’s every chance he’ll show us all how good he is. It’s also down to fitting the system.
Van de Beek’s case is also helped by the fact that Paul Pogba already has one foot out the door, meaning he has one fewer midfielder to compete with. On the flip side of that, I’d bet good money that at least one new player in that area of the field is signed.
I’ll reserve overall judgement for now, but Van de Beek is going to have to play some incredible football next season to turn things around at the Theatre of Dreams.
